Drusen
Drusen occur in the retina outside the macula and in the macula, as small or as large deposits. They occur also in the optic nerve. We remain uncertain as to their exact nature, but the small variety, the type outside the macula and the type in the optic nerve do not usually harm the vision. But the enlarging, coalescing type in the macula, often lead to CNV [see above] causing wet macular degeneration. These eyes get monitored much more closely.
